Fort Popham State Historic Site

This granite Civil War-era fort sits right on the coast, and you're free to walk the whole thing top to bottom, no ropes or barriers keeping you out. Kids can climb the stone stairways up to the top level for a view straight out over the ocean, then explore the dark tunnels and gun rooms below. Free to visit.
