About

This was Maine's first fort built entirely of granite, finished in 1869 to guard the mouth of the Penobscot River. You can climb through the dark passageways, gun emplacements, and stairwells that make it one of the best-preserved forts in New England. It's right next to the Penobscot Narrows Bridge Observatory, so it's an easy add-on to the day.
