Fort Hancock Museum, Kearney Road, Sandy Hook, NJ, USA

About

This old Army base defended New York Harbor from 1895 all the way to 1974. You can walk more than 100 historic buildings, including old gun batteries and even a Cold War-era Nike missile site used to track nuclear weapons. Kids can bike the flat multi-use path that runs right through the fort, and there's a restored 1898 officer's home called History House furnished to look like the 1940s. Free to visit, with public restrooms right on site. Museum is open seasonally
